Making a ringtone from a song

A ringtone is just a short audio file in the format your phone expects. The work is picking the right few seconds: you want the part that is recognisable within about two seconds, because that is all the attention a ringing phone gets before someone reaches for it.

Play the track above, stop where you want the ringtone to begin, and press Use current playback position. Choose a length, choose your phone, and download.

iPhone or Android?

  • iPhone — M4R. Apple expects AAC audio with the .m4r extension, and a maximum of 40 seconds. Anything longer is rejected by the phone.
  • Android — MP3. No special format and no length limit. A plain MP3 dropped into the Ringtones folder works.

Installing it

iPhone: connect the phone to a computer, open Finder (macOS Catalina and later) or iTunes (Windows), and drag the M4R file onto the device. It then appears under Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone. A browser cannot install a ringtone directly — that is an iOS restriction, not a limitation of this tool.

Android: copy the MP3 into the Ringtones folder in internal storage, then pick it under Settings → Sound → Phone ringtone. Many phones also let you set any audio file as a ringtone straight from the file manager.

Picking a good section

  • Skip the intro. Most songs take 10 to 20 seconds to get going. A ringtone that opens on ambience sounds like silence.
  • Start on a beat. Beginning mid-phrase sounds like a mistake, especially when the tone loops.
  • Think about the loop. A ringtone repeats until answered, so check that the end running back into the start is not jarring.
  • Watch the volume. A quiet passage makes a poor ringtone. If the whole track is quiet, raise it first — see Change Audio Quality.

Frequently asked questions

My file is not an MP3. What now?

Convert it first with the audio format converter, then come back. Extracting from a video? Use Video to MP3.

Is there a watermark or a beep?

No. The output is exactly the section you selected, nothing added.

Can I use any song?

Technically the tool will cut whatever you upload. Whether you may use a commercial track as your own ringtone depends on where you live and how you obtained the file — that part is on you.

How is this different from the Audio Cutter?

Same trimming engine. The Audio Cutter gives you a waveform and arbitrary lengths; this page enforces ringtone limits and exports M4R.
