Taking the sound out of a video

A video file holds picture and sound as separate streams in one container. Extracting audio means keeping the sound stream and discarding the picture, which usually cuts the file to a fraction of its original size — a 150MB clip often becomes a few megabytes of audio.

Common uses: keeping the sound from an interview or lecture, saving a live performance to listen to later, pulling dialogue out for transcription, or getting a soundtrack into an editor without the video alongside it.

Which format to choose

  • MP3 — Plays on anything. The right pick if you just want to listen to it or send it to someone.
  • WAV — Uncompressed. Large, but adds no further loss, so it is the safe input for an editor or a transcription tool.
  • FLAC — Lossless like WAV but roughly half the size. Better than WAV unless your software refuses to read it.
  • M4A — AAC audio. Natural fit if the video came from an Apple device and you are staying there.
  • OPUS / OGG — Efficient open formats. OPUS is excellent for speech at small sizes.
  • AIFF / WMA / CAF — For specific software that expects them.

How is this different from Video to MP3?

Same underlying job, different question. Video to MP3 always gives you an MP3, which is what most people want and needs no decision. This page exists for when the format matters — most often because the audio is going into an editor, and you would rather not pass it through a lossy MP3 step on the way.

About quality

The audio inside a video was already compressed when the video was made. Extracting to WAV or FLAC avoids adding a second round of loss, which is worth doing before editing — but it does not recover anything the original encoder threw away. A muffled recording extracts as a muffled WAV, just a larger one.

Need a smaller result afterwards? Run it through Compress Audio. Only need part of it? The Audio Cutter trims MP3s. Want it as a ringtone? Try the Ringtone Maker.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste a video URL?

No. This tool works on files already on your device — there is no link input.

Is there a size limit?

100MB per file. For something longer, trim the video first and upload only the part you need.

Will my file stay on the server?

No. Uploads and results are deleted automatically 15 minutes after the job is created.

What if the video has no audio track?

The job fails with an error rather than handing you an empty file. Check the video plays with sound before uploading.
